Ellery first spotted the portrait hanging over the guest bed at her grandmother’s home during a recent visit.

‘The first night that I was there, I spent a good deal of time staring at the portrait with a lot of curiosity.

‘I think I felt a strong connection to it, but I did not have any idea who she was.

‘The following morning, I asked grannie who the portrait was.

‘She was delighted to tell me all about my great-great-grandmother, Jessie.

‘That evening after learning her story, I sat down and pondered even more about the portrait.

‘I stared at it and I couldn’t help but think of O Superman by Laurie Anderson – the line she sings: “You don’t know me, but I know you.”
