A young woman has received a seizure notice for parking her bike on a wooden railing on Sydney’s lower north shore.

Natasha Usmar, 39, parked her bike near Folly Point in Cammeray. But when she returned, she was shocked to find a bright yellow notice threatening to confiscate the bike if it wasn’t removed.

‘If this item remains, the North Sydney Council intends to take it in its possession after 5pm on 18/11/23,’ the notice states.

A puzzled Usmar contacted the council, and they informed her that she was not allowed to tie her bike to council property.

Instead, she was advised to use the designated council bike racks to secure her bike.

‘So my bicycle just got a seizure notice because it’s tied up here to the North Sydney Council property, but there’s nowhere to park my bike,’ she said.

‘So how am I supposed to get from A to B?’

‘All the cars get spots. There’s heaps of car spots but nowhere to park my bike.

‘And apparently all the people who live around here complain because it’s, like, disrupting their well being or whatever. I just think it’s ridiculous.’

Ms Usmar explained that she is unable to store the bike on her compact wooden boat, due to the limited space, and she finds it challenging to transport the bike from the boat to the land using a kayak or a tinnie.

‘I put it there on that strip because it’s out of the way and the cars aren’t allowed to park on that spot, so it’s not affecting any of the people parking, or driving around,’ she said.

‘I didn’t really understand why anyone would have a problem with it.’

The council referred to an online map of places where she can legally park her bike, but the nearest spot was a 20 minute walk away.

‘So what’s the point of being able to have a bicycle to take you from your home to where you’re going if you’ve got to then walk like 20 or 30 [minutes] … it doesn’t make any sense,’ Natasha said.

Daily Mail Australia can reveal that North Sydney Council will install bicycle ring parking at Folly Point in the coming weeks in response to Natasha’s request.

A council spokeswoman confirmed three bikes received seizure notices last Tuesday in relation to the Public Spaces (Unattended Property) Act.

‘The bikes had been observed for 28 days before they were given notice to move,’ she said.

‘Council provides bike parking across the North Sydney local government area and our website invites residents to tell us where and what type of bike parking they think is needed.

‘We review all recommendations when allocating budget for new bicycle infrastructure.

‘To assist residents and visitors to find a bicycle parking, we have a map of all bike racks in the Council area on our website.’

It’s understood the owner of the illegally parked Volvo won’t be fined.

‘Our rangers and parking officers issue fines when they see illegally parked vehicles, but do not issue fines unless they witness the offence,’ the spokeswoman added.
