Stealing a flying fish 'steals' a woman's phone and takes it back to the ocean in a viral video

Even fish need screen time now! Pickpockets are already a headache we all face on land, but who knew these petty thieves could follow you to the middle of the ocean? A new video going viral on the internet has left people completely speechless as a bewildering flying fish steals a woman in the Philippines.

In the video, two women pose for the camera as they take a boat through the crystal clear waters of the Philippines. However, the two women are caught off guard when an apparent flying fish “steals” a phone from their hands.

The fish jumps onto the boat out of nowhere and knocks over the woman’s smartphone, taking it with it into the ocean. Within seconds, the woman loses her phone right under her nose. If that’s not the perfect heist, who knows what is?

The incident occurred on June 19 off the coast of the Leyte province in the Philippines. The relative of the woman without a phone, Cha Ursal, told Jam Press as she recalled the bizarre incident: “What happened was so unexpected.”

The phone was finally found on land that same night.

On the day of the fish attack, Ursal and the robbery victim, Neressa Ursal Maquilan, had been on a boating expedition to pay their respects to her late aunt in a cemetery when the fish flew away. In the clip filmed by a friend, Ursal is seen posing for a photo with Maquilan, who is holding her phone in her lap with his hands on top of it. This is precisely when the gray scaler decides to jump in and crash the party.

The clip ends shortly after, as Maquilan reaches for her phone, visibly perplexed by the surprise appearance. While she had no idea at the time which gust of wind had taken her phone away, it was only after watching the video that Maquilan understood that a fish flew in and she took her phone away.

The phone remained missing until that same night, when it reached the coast. Ursal recalled that later that night, when the tide was out, someone located the phone on the shore and returned it: “Someone found the phone on the shore and [it] was returned to us.”

The shocking robbery at sea ended up being a blessing in disguise, as Maquilan’s sister-in-law bought him a new phone when his old one was obviously damaged beyond repair. Ursal recounted: “It’s rare for something like this to happen, so we feel special.”
