A single mother who won a $343.9 million lottery jackpot ended up receiving only half of the prize she had bagged.

Lerynne West, of Redfield, Iowa, was one of two people to win a $688 million Powerball prize in October 2018, in what was the state’s largest lottery at the time.

At that time, State Lottery officials revealed that she had shared the jackpot with another winning ticket holder who lived in New York City.

But when he discovered that he had hit the jackpot, he was faced with two options.

The first was to receive 30 smaller payments of the money over the next 29 years, and the second was to receive a lump sum of $198.1 million, which would become $140.6 million after taxes.

West opted for the cash option, which paid him the immediate sum and meant he received less than half of what he had originally won in the Lottery jackpot.

He said he dreams of winning a jackpot, but “once you’ve won, you realize the responsibility and impact you can have, and all the frivolity goes out the window.”

The 51-year-old had worked for a health insurance organization but retired just a week before hitting the jackpot at odds of 292.2 million to one.

She said at the time: ‘I’m excited to share my winnings with family and friends, I plan to buy a new car and look forward to a long vacation, or several.

“I also plan to donate to causes and organizations important to my family through our newly established Callum Foundation.”

The Callum Foundation was named after his grandson Callum, who died after only one day when he was born prematurely.

The charitable foundation focuses on making grants in the areas of poverty and hunger alleviation; education; animal welfare; and veterans affairs.

West, a mother of three, bought the ticket when she was out with her sister when they stopped for lunch, but then accidentally left it on the floor of her truck.

When she couldn’t find her ticket after the drawing and discovered a winner had been bought in Iowa, she called her sister, who found it and sent her a photo.

West then checked his numbers and realized that he had hit the jackpot.

‘I told my sister to get in her truck and get that ticket and get up here right now! And drive slow,’ West said.

Under Iowa law, winner information is public and, unlike some states, winners cannot be anonymous.

After bagging the massive prize, West appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where she opened up about her disbelief at the win.

He told the host how when he first entered his numbers on the IALottery website, it returned no results, but he quickly realized that this was because he had entered the wrong date.

When he corrected the date, he realized he had hit the jackpot, and the rest is history.
