Netflix live-action adaptation of One Piece broke viewing records on August 5, consequently sending the internet into hysterical ani-mania – with many fans admitting that the remake has far surpassed their expectations.

Originally announced in January 2020, the long-awaited series has won legions of fans after bringing the anime phenomena into the live-action world when it was released last week.

Developed by showrunners Matt Owens and Steven Maeda (Helix, Pan Am), the series is based on the ongoing manga by Eiichiro Oda, which was adapted into a popular anime from 1999.

Within the first few days of its release on August 31, One Piece quickly became the No 1 ranked TV series in 84 different countries around the world.

The hit eight-episode adventure series surpassed the record set by season one of Netflix’s Addams Family adaptation Wednesday and season four of Stranger Things.

It was also recently revealed that the eight-part series cost an eye-watering $17 million per episode, more than even the fantasy HBO epic Game Of Thrones – which cost around $3 million less per episode.

Luffy sets off from his small village on a perilous journey to find the legendary, highly coveted treasure, One Piece, to become ‘King of the Pirates.’

However, in order to find and acquire the ultimate prize, Luffy is tasked with assembing a crew of quirky characters before finding a ship to sail, searching every inch of the blue seas, outpacing the Marines, and outwitting dangerous rivals.

However, some eagle-eyed viewers have noticed a couple of hilarious blunders within the trailer and first episode – forcing Netflix to take action in altering the scenes.

A fan on X, who goes by @OP_Netflix_Fan, was quick to spot and highlight an inconsistency on July 28 from the official pre-release trailer on the Netflix site.

During a snippet depicting character Roger’s execution, an extra, who was wearing a short-sleeved black T-shirt, was seen wearing a smartwatch – inconsistent with alternative realities presented in the show.

Netflix has since removed the smartwatch worn by an extra during Roger’s execution scene. The updated One Piece Live Action Trailer can now be found on their website.

TikTok user @NunoLuna posted a clip from the first episode of character Zoro engaged in a sword fight – but his sword sheath appears to bend flexibly in half like a paper straw.

The post received more than 1M views and over 2000 comments from bemused fans, with one jokingly writing: ‘His swords are made of rubber.’

The One Piece franchise has already been so popular around the world that it has a Guinness World Records title for the most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author – with 416,566,000 copies printed up until 2022.

According to Guinness World Records Kids, One Piece began 25 years ago, with author Eiichiro Oda saying in the past that he originally planned to finish the story in 2002, after just five years.

The writer even has the final ending planned out, but he has delayed it for several years as he continued to create epic characters, battles and adventures.

The plot of the live-action, as well as the manga and anime, revolves around pirates – with some even based on real life pirates, according to Complex.

Gol D. Roger, the Infamous King of Pirates, is based on a French pirate named Olivier Levasseur, who hid a treasure that’s yet to be discovered to this day.

The One Piece animated series currently sits at 1,071 episodes and counting, with eight TV specials and 13 films. And now, with the arrival of Netflix’s live-action series, even more fans will be introduced to the incredible world of Luffy and friends.
