A mother of two who calls herself the ‘Saleage Queen’ revealed her tips and tricks for using coupons and discounts to save up to $60 on her weekly purchase.

Liz Cook, from L’Anse, Michigan, has earned more than 375,000 followers on TikTok, where she shares her secrets to getting the best deals to stretch her family’s budget even further.

The 39-year-old, who lives with her husband Eric, 37, and their two children, told The Sun how she got into couponing after falling on hard times during the covid-19 pandemic.

Her work as an Uber and Lyft driver dried up during the lockdown, meaning they were completely reliant on her husband’s income. She was denied her unemployment and she remembers how there was a time when she only had $20 or $30 a week to buy food for the family of four.

Cook, who now works as a shopper for an online reselling company, began using rebate apps in February 2021.

Cook told how he was able to reduce his weekly bill to just $100, which is less than half what the average family of four spends on groceries, according to the Department of Agriculture.

On her TikTok page, @liz_the_clearancequeen details how you don’t have to shop at discount stores to save big.

She explains how you can use digital coupons at stores like Walgreens and Kroger and still get items for as little as 50 cents to $1. These can be accessed through the free mobile app or the store’s website.

His method is simple. First, she makes a list of the products she wants to buy that week.

Then check the digital coupons for your regular stores and see if there are any deals available on those items.

‘For example, I need a hamburger. Are there any bands on sale or any brands that have a discount?’ she said.

Cook also maximizes her savings by using free cash-back apps that give discounts on household essentials.

These services give customers back a percentage of what they spend on qualifying purchases. For big-ticket items, like a $300 TV, you’d get $21 on a typical 7 percent rebate offer.

She recommends trying the Ibotta and ShopKick apps, saying she often saves up to $40 on a shopping trip by using them.

Ibotta allows shoppers to submit a receipt and withdraw earnings on certain products after shopping in the store. Since it was founded in 2012, it has returned over $1.2 billion in cash rewards to over 40 million users.

Cook said he regularly saves on items like cheese, bread, cereal and pasta sauce by using the app.

When it comes to holiday shopping, Cook’s trick is to look for clearance items immediately after Christmas, or at unusual times of year for particular stores.

“The Walmart sale normally hits hard in January and July,” he told The Sun. ‘I make a tally sheet so as not to cross the line. I am a true believer in all “Christmas in July”.

She added: ‘Learning to save has completely changed my life.’

For those who have never tried coupons before, he recommends starting with the products you already buy and the stores you already visit, and building from there.

Some of the cashback apps also offer offers for new customers.
