Irish University Is Offering First-Ever Degree Aimed At Becoming An ‘Influencer’

Ireland’s Southeast Technical University (SETU) is introducing a new three-year bachelor of arts degree in content creation and social media, the first of its kind in the country.

This degree will be available from September 2024, and applications for the course can be submitted starting in November.

The course will include business skills, video and audio editing, creative writing, and critical and cultural skills.

According to Dr. Eleanor O’Leary, a university lecturer in media and communications, the course will focus on these vital areas.

“We saw that there was a growing interest in this area both from students and young people and also from employers. So we went ahead in developing the degree at that point.”

Dr. O’Leary pointed out that the influencer sector has grown significantly since 2019, with a global worth estimated between 14 billion and 16 billion Euros.

She also mentioned that graduates from this course will have the skills to work as independent content creators, collaborate with brands, and even find employment within companies.

Dr O’Leary further said, “It’s an area with a specific skill set. It draws on existing media, PR, and marketing skills but is a new area in and of itself.”

She said the course aims to educate students on maintaining an audience and working with businesses to monetize it.

“As someone who ‘stars,’ creating content at home or by themselves, they may not understand that whole part of the industry where there are contracts and agencies, and business involved,” she said.
