In Mumbai, a comedian faced an early eviction from his rented apartment amid the lockdown. 

Feeling unsafe in his current living situation, Kashyap Swaroop agreed to vacate the premises as per the landlord’s request. 

The landlord assured a refund of the ₹60,000 deposit upon departure. However, after surrendering the keys, communication from the landlord ceased, prompting Swaroop to seek assistance from X and consult with lawyers. 

Subsequently, he approached the police for support in the matter. Mumbai Police intervened, facilitating the resolution of the issue and ensuring the comedian received the promised deposit refund.

On the microblogging platform, user Kashyap Swaroop shared, “My landlord asked me to vacate my home before the termination of the lock-in period. He has not refunded 60% of my security deposit despite leaving the house in excellent condition. 

Are there any lawyers who can assist in recovering the outstanding amount? He is avoiding my calls and messages.” 

Swaroop offered a comprehensive overview of the incident, backed by screenshots of the WhatsApp conversation. According to the exchanged messages, the landlord pledged to refund the security deposit upon Swaroop’s departure. He mentioned the issuance of a cheque contingent upon verifying electricity usage and inspecting the flat. 

Despite Swaroop vacating the premises as agreed, the landlord reneged on the promise, dismissing, “Please do what you must do. Thank you.” Swaroop shared the screenshot of this WhatsApp exchange on Twitter, expressing frustration with landlords on what he described as a “massive ego trip.”

He reached out for assistance, seeking support in navigating the situation.

A few hours later, Swaroop provided an update, expressing gratitude to @MumbaiPolice for swift resolution: “Super grateful to @MumbaiPolice for resolving this immediately. 

I guess there’s still a silver lining to Mumbai.” In the comments, he detailed the police’s request for him to visit the station and share his side of the story. Despite the landlord’s initial insistence on a deposit transfer, Swaroop’s bank statement revealed otherwise. 

An hour later, the issue was rectified. Swaroop disclosed additional costs incurred, including moving charges and deductions, resulting in a loss of 30k, along with furnishings made in the previous house. He anticipated spending 15k on furnishing the new residence, equivalent to 1.5 months’ rent.
