But with over 350 different breeds, knowing which one to choose for your lifestyle is a challenge, especially if you want to give your pet the best possible home.

Here, dog expert Lorna Winter has shared her top five breeds when it comes to ease of training, especially since new owners probably won’t want to deal with lack of sleep and broken pillows forever.

The co-founder of the UK’s number one puppy training app, Zigzag, and director of the UK Dog Training and Behavior Charter, says Border Collies, German Shepherds and Labradors are among the breeds that top the list.

Also included are poodles, known for their history as circus stars, and the adorable Staffordshire Bull Terriers.

“Whichever pup you choose, there’s no time to waste on training,” Lorna said.

‘You want to start from the point of the day. My only advice to puppy owners starting out with training is to learn which reward your pup likes best.

“Trust me, this will make the training process much smoother and help keep your pup motivated.”

BORDER COLLIE: THE EINSTEIN OF THE WORLD OF DOGS

It may surprise some people that this excited and energetic breed tops the list.

“They are one of the smartest breeds (if not the smartest), which means they love to learn and can pick up new tricks quickly,” says Lorna.

“However, the energetic nature of collies means that owners should have plenty of time to commit to training them, as they are not for the faint of heart.”

Because Border Collies are bred to be the “original sheepdog,” they have impressive problem-solving abilities that come from generations of working alongside humans.

“They are very good at receiving instructions and waiting for instructions,” added the expert. ‘Not to mention his strong work ethic.

“If you want to be the envy of your fellow park-goers with your impressive agility skills and complex tricks, then a Border Collie might be the dog for you if you have a lot of time on your hands to train.”

GERMAN SHEPHERD: THE WORKER ADDICTED

These gentle giants are also known for their work alongside humans, particularly in emergency services such as the police or the military.

“They’re easy to train because they’re eager to work with you and hate getting into trouble,” says Lorna. ‘The perfect student!’

Furthermore, he explained that they really enjoy the new tricks.

“They love brain-boosting activities and have an amazing work ethic,” she added. “No wonder they are often seen at dog places like Obedience or Working Trials.”

LABRADOR RETRIVER: THE FAITHFUL PUPPY

“Something that makes Labrador Retrievers easy to train is the fact that they are extremely food motivated,” Lorna said. “Just make sure you don’t end up overfeeding them when they learn new tricks!”

The dog expert also praised their “energy cubes,” which make them responsive and focused while learning.

“Importantly, these outgoing pups are incredibly social and eager to please their owners,” he added.

“This means that they respond well to positive reinforcement training methods and can learn new commands quickly.

“While all dogs are intelligent, Labrador Retrievers are particularly forgiving in their training and will not need large amounts of stimulation unlike the German Shepherd or Border Collie.”

POODLE: THE STAR OF THE CIRCUS

Lorna says that the poodles’ past as circus dogs may explain their training prowess.

“However, before this life of sequins and sparkles, poodles worked as hunting dogs, which means they are highly intelligent,” he explained.

“To this day, they still love the challenge of complex tasks like trick training routines and cognitive tasks like ‘match the sample’ where they can recognize objects by name.”

“Two of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier’s favorite things are cuddling and training,” Lorna said.

“Despite their tough exterior, they are a sensitive breed that craves attention and affection, which means they love to train and learn new tricks as they just want to be included in family life.”

These community oriented pups are also known for their loyalty which means they will form a close bond with their owner which is sure to ‘make them a brilliant training partner’.
