The advice was discovered when a woman took to the Gardening UK Facebook group for advice.

She wrote: “What do/use people to stop cats from digging up flower beds and pooping in their yard?

“I recently made a new flower bed in the front of my house and every night a cat would come and dig up some and use it as a bathroom.”

Fellow gardeners rush to the comment to give their best advice: use orange peels.

One person wrote: “Orange peels have worked for me in the past. Put them down every day. Broke the cat habit and stopped coming for his daily poop pretty quickly.”

Another said: “Sliced lemons have worked for me. Do not wash.

“I haven’t had cats in my garden for just over two years. I understand they don’t like lavender plants either.”

A third added: “I use oranges and orange peels, they are fantastic! I am a cat owner and we have had to do that on occasion to prevent the cat from going into the corner of the wall etc.

“They just won’t go near it because they don’t like the smell. Not that any of these suggestions are cruel, but they will sniff the orange peels and walk away. It won’t hurt or bother them.” all.”
