As far as I’m concerned, nothing beats the finish and staying power you get from a brush when it comes to applying foundation.

Here are three of my favourites, to suit all budgets.

5I tried three of the best foundation brushes

Budget

ELF Cosmetics Buffing Foundation Brush, £6, elfcosmetics.co.uk: I was pleasantly surprised by this affordable brush.

It’s super soft, densely packed, and doesn’t leave streaks.

It’s a bit smaller so it also works well for blending cream blush or contouring.

But it does fall off a bit and doesn’t wash off very well.

So little and often is the best approach to cleaning if you want to keep the bristles.

Other than that, no complaints.

This is a solid option if you’re new to brushes and don’t want to spend a lot on getting the right tools.

Middle range

The Vieve 117 Foundation Brush adds a wow factor.5Vieve 117 foundation brush gives a wow factorCredit: SUPPLIED

Vieve 117 Foundation Brush, £26, cultbeauty.co.uk – This brush was created by professional makeup artist Jamie Genevieve and I knew I was going to love it even before I tried it.

The deluxe wooden handle, gold trim, and synthetic bristles that work like natural bristles (holding and distributing product better) add to the wow factor.

The bristles are a bit longer than the buffing brushes I like to use for foundation, which took me a bit to get used to.

It means that you tend to use the side of the brush rather than the top to apply makeup, but my complexion looked flawless once I was done.

The longer bristles also mean it’s great with powder products, which the others aren’t.

If you want that flexibility, look no further.

Luxury

IT Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Complexion Perfection Brush No7, £36.50, cultbeauty.co.uk – I’ve used this brush for at least five years, both on my dressing table and in my makeup bag.

Its head is the largest of the three brushes I tested this week, which means you can apply your foundation faster while maintaining a nice finish.

It cleans well and hasn’t shed a single bristle yet.

Plus, it’s dual-ended, so you get a smaller brush, perfect for applying concealer, as well as the larger foundation brush.

It is expensive but it really lasts and you get two great brushes for the price.
