The reasons why Kayla is a fan of sourdough

  1. Great for gut health
  2. Has a lower glycemic index than other types of bread
  3. Doesn’t require preservatives
  4. Incredibly nutritious
  5. Delicious

‘Sourdough bread is fermented, so it is much easier to digest than white bread,’ she said. ‘It also acts as a prebiotic, meaning that the fiber helps feed the ‘good’ bacteria in your gut.’

She added that it is ‘lower in gluten than other types of bread, so people with gluten intolerance may be able to tolerate it better than normal bread.’

Varney said another benefit is that sourdough has a ‘lower glycemic index’ than other types of bread and ‘doesn’t cause a blood sugar spike.’

The wellness influencer went on to note that ‘it doesn’t require’ preservatives.

‘Sourdough bread contains acetic acid, which naturally prevents the growth of mold,’ she explained. ‘So it essentially naturally preserves itself.’

Varney said it is also ‘incredibly nutritious,’ containing ‘moderate amounts of iron, calcium, B vitamins, folate, zinc, potassium, selenium, iron, magnesium, [and] vitamin E.’

The nutritionist’s fifth and final reason for loving sourdough bread is simply that ‘it’s freakin’ delicious.’

‘Here to support you and your love of bread,’ she captioned the video, which has been viewed more than 527,000 times.

Hundreds of people flocked to the comments to share their thoughts.

‘You had me at sourdough bread,’ one fan joked.

‘I loveeee bread but can’t be trusted. Noticed when I switched to sourdough I don’t get bloated or gain weight,’ someone else responded.

‘I recently started eating bread again and intuitively decided to make sourdough my bread of choice,’ another added. ‘Sooooo good. Thank you for firming the decision.’

Others wanted to know where they should buy sourdough bread and what ingredients to look out for.

‘You’ll want to look for one with just flour, water, salt! No additives!’ Varney advised. ‘If it has yeast in the ingredients, it’s not real sourdough.’

‘Your best bet is to buy fresh from a bakery!’ she added, saying she gets her sourdough loaves at Wegmans.
