Before the makeover, the brothers slept in bunk beds in the same bedroom. At night, Steve and Lynn gave up their room to give Ruben a space to relax and do his homework.
The family of five also fought over a single bathroom and struggled to fit on the two loveseats in the living room.
The dining room table also presented a problem, with only four people able to sit properly.
But despite the crushed living situation and the mental difficulties it created, Lynn was adamant that she would continue to live like this if it meant she could keep her grandchildren at home.
Lynn said that Uche, then just six years old, was the one who discovered her mother dead in her bed.
