German Toilet Seat Designs: Quora's Insights Into Their Unconventional Style

Germans are known for their unusual and occasionally strange tastes, particularly when it comes to autos and food. Today, we’re here to talk about their toilet seats, which have an entirely different shape and design than their food selections or automotive inventions.

These are the most unusual toilet seats you’ll ever see, dubbed ‘shelf shitter’ by the Germans.

Recently, Quora users posed the question, “Why is German toilet design different from the rest of the world?” The forum quickly became filled with answers from users who offered their theories about why this was happening.

Many users jumped on board to contribute their knowledge. One user recounted the entire scenario in simple terms. He mentioned that the part of the bowl that receives urine and excrement in German toilet seats is flat rather than conical. It is also located higher than the siphon hole.

Why is the design different from the rest of the world?

First, he stressed the Western method, stating that the sooner the faeces were soaked in water, the better, as this would prevent the diffusion of disagreeable odours.

The user went on to say that the German designers thought the original design was flawed. “Because the siphon hole was so low and vertical, there was a high risk of water splashing on your bottom every time you used the toilet,” he wrote.

That was a major annoyance for our German friends. As a result, the flat bottom design significantly decreases the risk of being splashed.”

How could the design be flawed?

“One could certainly argue that the flat bottom design is flawed as well, because it displays your feces in full view, which you may not want to see every time you do the deed,” he added.

Surprisingly, Germans have no objections to this at all.” For Germans, it is a benefit of their design that they can readily detect worm infestations and other digestive disorders by inspecting their excrement. For a better understanding, the Germans believe in making a mental note of your morning poop, which some may find nauseating.
