Have you ever wondered why it’s so difficult to figure your perfect size in jeans?

It seems like every single brand uses different sizing, and even if one pair of Levi’s fits perfectly, a similar pair in the exact same size might be tiny on you.

Long Island-based TikTok creator Jess Jaeger, who makes videos as Therapeutic Nutritionist, created a now viral clip about the sizing conundrum, writing, ‘Wondering why men’s jeans sizes have two different measurements (waist/inseam, in inches) and women’s jeans have a number that correlates to absolutely nothing.’

Commenters widely agreed that the single size listed in inches made shopping for denim difficult.

Does one size fit ALL?

  • Sizolution is an AI size recommendation solution designed to intelligently process customer and garment data
  • According to Sizolution, sizing is off because ‘brands and retailers have to cater to the whole world in all its diversity, so they tend to focus on certain demographics and home in on what sells best with them’
  • Because of this, the same brands can have inconsistent sizing even across similar items

‘Why do I have three different sizes of jeans in my closet that all fit me perfectly???’ Jess captioned the video, while No Doubt’s Just A Girl played in the background.

When women buy jeans, standard sizing ranges from 23 to 32, and there isn’t length or hip measurements to guarantee the pants will fit.

Commenters were quick to weigh in with their own sizing issues, from wearing different sizes in the same brand to having trouble figuring out the correct length of jeans.

‘I get Levi’s. I’m always a 26W x 32L. That way there’s no guessing,’ one proclaimed, as another responded, ‘Ok but I’m a 32 waist in this one pair of Levi’s but no other 32 fits me.’

Another woman asked if ‘other pants are too big?’ because ‘Levi’s always tend to run small in my experience.’

Levi’s wasn’t the only brand with the sizing discrepancies. A commenter said, ‘I have three pairs of jeans from American Eagle, all the same size and same style, and they fit differently.’

Another woman complained she ‘bought a pair of size 8 ‘regular length’ jeans from New Look and they were halfway up my shins.’

One woman commented that their ‘pants range from size 00 to 8.’

Others thought it was because there are more fit options for women than men, with one person explaining, ‘Fit should be taken into consideration. Slim vs. skinny vs. wide vs mom etc.,’ adding that even when the length is included it ‘doesn’t help’ because ‘most places don’t include hip for women.’

Some taller women explained it’s almost impossible to judge the fit without a length measurement.

‘I wish I could buy jeans by length. Not every store offers a “Long” option in women’s sizes,’ a 5′ 10′ woman complained.

‘I heard they also adjust sizes, sometimes by brand, so women don’t feel self conscious wearing a “bigger” size number,’ a commenter claimed.

Some women were upset by women’s sizing in general, with one explaining, ‘And tell me why I have jeans that range from sizes 6 to 14. Women’s sizes are a JOKE. I have a bra that’s 34C and one 32DD make it make sense.’

Even men got in on the action, with one writing, ‘Husband here. Can never buy anything for my wife because of this. Especially because that arbitrary number for one company is different from others.’

He wasn’t the only gentleman who thought men’s sizing made more sense.

One woman commented, ‘A friend of mine buys small men’s jeans for just that reason she can get the two sizes to fit her better.’

One woman mused, 'I heard they also adjust sizes, sometimes by brand, so women don't feel self conscious wearing a 'bigger' size number' (stock image)

In a satirical follow-up video, Jess responded to some of the negative comments from men, saying, ‘You guys showed up in the comments and you made the really valid points that women are illogical, and women are fat, and women are too sensitive. And you also even said that women shouldn’t wear pants.’

‘I hope you have the day you deserve,’ Jess joked.

Men’s fashion expert Joseph Pastrana, who wrote the book Homespun – True Tales of Tweed, called sizing a ‘complicated matter.’

‘To begin with, men’s jeans (or trousers) are usually measured by waist x inseam and leaves out hips because the ratio between the circumference of hip to waist is close enough not to matter,’ Joseph told DailyMail.com.

‘Unfortunately, the particulars of how the ratio is calculated is lost in time,’ Joseph continued.

‘To make matters worse, as they years have gone by, they’ve adjusted what that number means to anything from half an inch to an inch and a half difference,’ he warned.

Joseph said vanity sizing can also cause an issue for both men and women’s pants, when garment sizes are numbered ‘lower’ so as to flatter the consumer into assuming they are smaller than they really are,’ which can lead to a ‘difference in actual waist size can vary from half an inch or higher.’

The expert suggested trying on jeans before you buy them to guarantee they fit, because otherwise, you could be left wondering why your normal size isn’t the right fit.
