A woman has had the last laugh after discovering her landlord who forced her out of her apartment when he hiked up the rent has been unable to find a new tenant.

Dancer Megan Bowen, 29, was shocked to learn that the owners of her building would be raising her monthly rent to $4,000.

She and her boyfriend had originally moved into the Bushwick pad during the height of the pandemic, in fall of 2020, then signing a lease for a steal of $2,300.

The three-bedroom, 900-square foot apartment provided ample space for the couple, offering Meghan a room for her own private dance studio as well as allowing the pair to get a dog, Jazzy.

But, after trying and failing to negotiate down from the lofty $4,000 price point set by her landlord, Megan, her boyfriend and Jazzy had no choice but to move out by the end of October.

Megan was especially jarred with the price bump given the issues the building had had over the years, she claimed.

According to one TikTok, she’d been having to manually light her stovetop burners, her ceiling had water damage, and the toilet flush handle was broken.

In another TikTok, she sarcastically revealed the building’s ‘landscaping’: an enormous heap of trash on the sidewalk next to the front entrance.

At another point, she’d gone down to the basement to do her laundry, only to find the floor was covered in water.

Back in January of 2021, she shared a series of TikToks revealing one day the entire stairwell of her four-story building turned into a waterfall of sorts thanks to heavy rainfall.

Megan, however, was able to have the last laugh upon looking up the listing for her former apartment on StreetEasy a couple weeks after moving out – and discovering that the asking rent had been lowered to $3,400, presumably because the landlord had been unable to find a tenant for $4,000 per month.

‘You know how my landlord raised my rent to $4,000 and we got priced out and we had to move?’ Megan recapped in a TikTok shared last week.

What's more, the handle of the toilet in her old apartment had been broken In a separate incident back in January 2022, Megan discovered that the stairwell in her four-story building had turned into a waterfall thanks to heavy rain

‘I just did a little searching, cause I was like “No one’s paying that much. I know no one’s gonna pay that much.”

‘I did a little research. I was like, “Did anyone move in?” I’m really curious, did anyone move into that apartment?

‘No! They didn’t! It’s still listed – and they dropped it $600!’ Megan fumed as she displayed a screengrab of the listing, at 308 Jefferson Street in the heart of Bushwick near Maria Hernandez Park.

‘They wouldn’t even negotiate with me. They would not even negotiate the new price. Here they are now with an empty unit!’ she exclaimed.

In the meantime, Megan found an apartment in a different neighborhood to sublet for the time being, which came with a roommate.

The setup also meant that she’d be temporarily living separately from her boyfriend – and their dog.

As she put it in one TikTok: ‘Sometimes, you gotta do what you gotta do.’
