A debate erupted on Good Morning Britain today over whether people over the age of 60 can be considered sex symbols.

Broadcaster Dawn Neesom insisted older woman are sexier by definition, while soap actress Debbie Arnold argued it’s demeaning to call older woman sex symbols.

Speaking to hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley, Debbie argued that ‘as you get older you want to be seen for more than that.’

The debate comes after Gary Lineker, when asked how it feels to be a sex symbol, replied: ‘I really don’t know about that…I’m 62!’ while on Saturday night, Strictly’s Angela Rippon wowed viewers with her high-kick in the air.

Debbie said: ‘When you’re younger you want to be a sex symbol, you want people to admire you, that’s what a sex symbol is. But as you get older you want to be seen for more than that, to be sophisticated and glamorous. It’s not about being not sexy it’s about not being a sex symbol.

‘I am a sexual woman, but I am not a sex symbol. It takes a lot to be a sex symbol.’

When asked if she thinks Angela Rippon is a sex symbol after she showed off her sizzling dance moves she replied: ‘No, she’s not, she’s much more than that.’

Dawn argued: ‘You can be an eminent news journalist and still a sex symbol, we have an example sitting right here in front of us.

‘To be a proper sex symbol you have to be a certain age, it’s about being confident in your own body, your experiences, and it’s about be confident in your own skin. Younger people don’t have that, it’s about the va va voom.’

‘We talk about the Love Island generation. Those young people are sexy but they are not sex symbols.

‘Today we have people like Helen Mirren who is incredibly sexy and Joan Collins who’s amazing, she’s 90.’

Debbie argued: ‘Really? because a sex symbol is somebody that you want to have sex with, if you had sex with Joan she would fall to pieces.

‘The general public, the general man, do you think he would really want to have sex with Joan Collins.’
