An author was fired by her editor after attacking a woman on TikTok for leaving her a four-star review.
Sarah Stusek wrote her first novel, Three Rivers, loosely about a real-life experience about a girl who was kidnapped in the middle of the night and taken to a wilderness therapy program for troubled teens.
The author, who got her start writing for shows like House of Cards, was hurt by a four-star review from Karleigh Kebartas.
Stusek took to TikTok to call out Kebartas, who complained that “the ending was a bit predictable, but other than that, it was amazing.”
“Yeah, well, it’s my life, not a fucking murder mystery,” Stusek said in the now-deleted video. ‘So you just gave me four stars…why?’
Kebartas had even admitted that the story was a “really great first novel”. and that he “loved how intricate the details were about the show Stella was on.”
Sarah Stusek (pictured) wrote her debut novel, Three Rivers, loosely about a real-life experience and it looks like the author, who got her start writing on TV shows like House of Cards, was hurt by a four-star review by Karleigh Kebartas. .
But the young woman has since updated her review, adding: ‘EDIT: The author is now attacking me on TikTok for not giving her a five star review (it was a four). Giving her one just for her attitude! I didn’t think the book was bad, but her attitude certainly is!
Since then, Stusek’s debut novel has been “bombarded with reviews” on Goodreads, a popular book website, resulting in an average of one star.
The book had 555 one-star reviews and 15 five-star reviews on Goodreads as of Tuesday afternoon.
“Don’t waste your time on this one,” read one review. ‘I’d give it zero if I could’ said another. “Not everyone can be a writer, don’t even bother reading this crap,” added one brutal critic.
Stusek, whose book was scheduled to be released in mid-September, has since been dropped by his publisher SparkPress.
Publisher Brooke Warner said on Twitter that the company decided to “part ways with one of our authors” for “various reasons, including but not limited to attacking a reviewer and many others online.”
Kebartas (pictured) had admitted that the story was a “really great first novel”. and that he “loved how intricate the details were about the show Stella was on.” He later updated his review to say that the author was attacking her online and that he wanted an apology, which Stusek gave him privately.
‘We appreciate our readers and value the time it takes to read and leave author reviews. While we cannot command our authors’ actions and reactions to their reviews, we do not condone attacking or making derogatory comments about reviewers under any circumstances,” Warner said.
‘We are a publisher whose fundamental principles are based on raising the voices of authors, which is not possible without readers. This lack of alignment, in addition to the behavior exhibited by one of our authors, has led us to part ways.’
Kebartas, who made his own video, admitted that he didn’t watch Stusek’s video because he “knew it would upset me.”
She thanked those who have defended her online and asked the author to apologize to her.
“Thank you all for being really nice to me,” he said in the video posted to his TikTok. I don’t think it’s funny and I don’t find it a joke.
Stusek apologized to Kebartas in private, according to Gizmodo, who said he admitted he’s “sorry for hurting” the critic.
Stusek hopes the book will still be published in September under a different publisher after hers dropped her for “lashing out at a reviewer and many others online,” among other things.
Stusek said in a later video that her original post was removed for “violating community guidelines,” but doubled down on her being a “comedian” and those who leave her terrible reviews “can’t take a joke.”
‘Obviously you haven’t read my book. But anyway, welcome to the show! she said.
Right now, the first-time author hopes her book can still be published in September, but with a different publisher.
Three Rivers follows a girl who is kidnapped in the middle of the night and taken to a wilderness therapy program for troubled teens that slowly begins to open up and she realizes why she is really there.
