Martin Lewis has urged anyone with a household income of up to £40,000 to complete a quick 10 minute check to see if they are entitled to extra money in the form of benefits and allowances.

The 51-year-old money saving expert advised people across the UK to take part in a profit calculator during his ITV programme, The Martin Lewis Money Show Live.

In a special on mortgages, Martin revealed his top tips for people struggling with their costs, even urging his viewers to check out what financial help they might be eligible for.

Speaking on his show, he said: “If you have a household income of up to £40,000, especially at the highest level if you have children or a high income, get access to a benefits calculator.”

Take ten minutes to see if you are missing out on any rights. £19bn in rights is not being claimed by people who are owed it, so it’s worth checking, even if you get nothing.’

The tool, available on the MoneySavingExpert site and on the government website, tells users if they can get cash benefits, including Universal Credit.

How do you check what benefits you are entitled to?

Independent benefits calculators on gov.uk and free claim help from Citizens Advice are available to help people check their eligibility and claim universal credit.

Several charities have benefit calculators you can use to figure out what you’re entitled to, including:

It is likely to ask for various personal details, such as information on savings, income, and any benefits users already have.

It comes after Policy in Practice (a social policy analysis and software company) revealed that £19 billion worth of benefits are not claimed.

According to research by the organization, more than 2.7 million people are not claiming £2.9 billion of council tax support.

Meanwhile, Universal Credit is a payment to help you with your living costs. You should be able to qualify for it if you are low-income, out of work, or unable to work.

Estimates suggest that a whopping £7.5bn in Universal Credit payments (worth £9,600 a year) go unclaimed every year.

Meanwhile, more than 750,000 families lose thousands of child benefit payments each year.

Child Benefit is a monthly payment for those with parental responsibilities for children under 16 (and those under 20 if studying full-time) provided no parent earns more than £60,000.

A quarter of a million retirees are missing out on thousands of dollars in rental assistance each year. Renters who are eligible for the Pension Credit and have low incomes can take advantage of the housing benefit.

When you apply for a pension credit, you can usually apply for the housing allowance at the same time.

But more than 850,000 retirees do not claim the pension credit even though they are entitled to it.

The pension credit supplements your income, but it can also qualify people for additional benefits, such as reduced council taxes and free TV licenses.

Elsewhere, a staggering half a million households are missing out on carer’s allowance in the UK.

You can apply for a caregiver’s allowance if you care for someone for 35 hours a week or more and receive certain benefits.

You do not have to live with them or be in a relationship and your claim can also be backdated by three months from the date of your application.

If you are working you must earn less than £123 per week. This is after taxes, national insurance and expenses.
